Bobcat vs. Kubota Mini Excavator: A Closer Look at Where They Overlap and Differ

Compact excavators are an important addition to almost any job site. They provide excellent assistance with construction, landscaping, and trenching. To help you find the right mini excavator for your needs, we’ll be comparing the specs of the Bobcat and Kubota mini excavator.

Bobcat vs. Kubota: Size and Power

When it comes to the overall size and engine power, the Bobcat and Kubota mini excavators are evenly matched.

The Bobcat mini excavator weighs in at 9,830 pounds, a spec that covers the Bobcat E42 model, as well as the Bobcat E35 and the Bobcat E26. Compare this to the similarly-sized Kubota mini excavator, with an operating weight of 9,020 pounds.

Both pieces of construction equipment are matched well in size, though the Bobcat unit operates at net 42 gross horsepower to the Kubota KX040-4 machine’s 40 horsepower, giving it slightly more power.

Bobcat vs. Kubota: Digging and Performance

Both the Bobcat and Kubota have a similar max travel speed, though the Bobcat is a hair faster at 3.3 MPH compared to the Kubota’s 3.1 MPH. However, the Bobcat shows clear superiority when it comes to digging force.

The Bobcat’s digging arm is shorter and is situated closer to the machine. The result is that it’s able to produce a substantial amount of breakout force. The Bobcat can deliver 5,820 lbs of arm digging force and 9,601 lbs of bucket digging force. The Kubota can produce 9,535 lbs of bucket digging force but only 4,112 of arm digging force.

Likewise, the Bobcat has a greater lift capacity than the Kubota model—4,921 lbs vs. 4,250 lbs—making the Bobcat better equipped to dig out tree stumps or perform other demanding tasks. The base model of the Bobcat also has an in-track swing frame, making it slightly more versatile.

The boom swing angle allows you to pull up tight to a nearby wall without worrying about damage. But as is, the max dig depth of the Bobcat comes up shorter than the Kubota mini excavator. The Kubota model provides 11.4 feet, while the Bobcat provides 10.4 feet of dig depth. However, the Bobcat’s customizable, extendable arm configurations allow you to reach a max dig depth of 12.4 feet, providing more versatility than the Kubota excavator.

Hence, the Bobcat emerges triumphant in terms of power and can be easily customized to be superior when it comes to digging depth as well.

Bobcat vs. Kubota: Precision Accuracy

Power means little, though, when your job site demands a bit more finesse. This area is where the Bobcat model really shows its superiority. The Bobcat machine offers a depth check system, alerting you when you’ve reached the desired depth.

The Kubota excavator lacks this system, which pushes the Bobcat further ahead when it comes to precise performance.

Bobcat vs. Kubota: User Experience

Users will appreciate the clear visibility of the Bobcat’s cockpit and easy-to-use joystick. This gives the operator a greater sense of clarity and control over the machine and the tasks it’s performing.

The Kubota has a similar setup, though the view from the cockpit isn’t quite as expansive, and the controls don’t feel as intuitive as those of the Bobcat.

Bobcat vs. Kubota: Accessories and Maintenance

All attachments for the Bobcat are designed to fit prior models. The same is not true for the Kubota model, which could dramatically add cost to your equipment budget.

Additionally, the Kubota uses a specialty diesel particulate filter that is notably expensive to replace. The Bobcat machine doesn’t require such a filter, making maintenance simpler for the Bobcat machine.
